President's Message
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The new year is a great opportunity for each of us to evaluate the successes and opportunities for improvement from the prior year. 2019 is no exception. We are half way through the Rotary year and Roswell Rotary can certainly list the following as huge successes:
- Record-setting Golf and Tennis Tournament netting $209, 381!
- Granting $10,000 for new construction equipment to Roswell High School and providing vocational volunteers to the program
- Granting $3,000 for mats, blankets and sheets for the NFCC Warming Center and providing volunteers during the coldest nights
- Providing excellent speakers and content to our members and guests through the Making Mentors project and encouraging our members to share what they learned
- Implementing a fun new way to inform members about social events and services projects called Rotary Jeopardy
- Recognizing significant member contributions to our club through Hammer Awards
- Honoring our First Responders at a meeting
- Welcoming Alara Su Bilgez our GRSP student from Turkey
- Supporting 12 Interact clubs with grants and liaisons and promoting Be THE Voice in our schools
- Collecting everyday supplies and hoodies for needy veterans living at Veterans Empowerment Organization
- Collecting back-to-school supplies, coats and toys for NFCC
- Provided funds for disaster relief in North Carolina and Georgia
- Participated in numerous community events, including 4th of July, 9/11 Tribute, Youth Day Parade and Alive in Roswell
- Cleaning up the Chattahoochee River
- Recognizing Students and Teachers from local schools
- Hosting District Governor Court Dowis for dinner and at a Regular Meeting, which included Big Wheels, Margaritas, and Hammer Awards
- Hosting a World Polio Day event at Houck’s raising $200 to end polio
- Volunteering at the Honor Air Basketball Tournament to raise money for Honor Air
- Holding numerous fun social events, including Hump Day, Fun on the Farm Day and Holiday Party
- Providing our members an excellent Directory in print and online
- Updating our website and Rotascope
- Continuing to raise awareness of our club through coverage in the local newspapers with 19 articles, 4 articles in the District Newsletter, social media and television
- Updating Roswell Rotary’s Strategic Plan and implementing a strong succession plan
Roswell Rotary has some great opportunities in 2019:
- Increase membership. We all have a responsibility to invite our friends to join us for a meeting, a service project and hopefully to join Roswell Rotary. Serving is more fun with your friends!
- Welcome RI President Barry Rassin and his wife, Esther, to Roswell Rotary on Saturday, Feb. 16 and be ready to be inspired. Roswell Rotary has never hosted a sitting RI President in its 68 years, so this is a big deal. Please let me know if you will help make the Rassins’ visit memorable. This meeting is ALL HANDS ON DECK, so please register and put it on your calendar! We will be collecting supplies for Puerto Rico seniors, too!
- Increase your giving to the RI Foundation. New Major Donors and Paul Harris Fellows will be recognized and pinned by RI President Barry Rassin on Feb. 16.
- Sign-up for and attend the Entrepreneurs Workshop and share it with people who want to improve their chance for success for starting and running their own business or helping your business! Hal Coleman is a leader in helping entrepreneurs succeed. Tee yourself and your staff up for success in 2019! All the proceeds go to end polio!
- Sign-up for and attend District Conference and join us for Spring Break for Adults! This year’s programs will honor our military, include a comedian and Adult Big Wheel races and, of course, the famous Roswell Rotary Hospitality Suite! You will not want to miss the FUN this year.
- Most importantly, find a place to serve! It is the BEST way to get to know your Rotary family. The Roswell Rotary Relays are coming in March and the Blood Drive and Memorial Day are coming up in May. We will likely do a clean-up day at VEO in February. Volunteer! The Directory lists over 70 committees with areas for service. Check it out and reach out to the chair to help. If you don’t see your passion, create your own project. Roswell Rotary loves to support our members’ passions—just ask Dave McCleary about End Human Trafficking and Debbie Cwalina about Be THE Voice. They are saving lives.
WELL DONE Roswell Rotary! I resolve to finish the 2018-2019 STRONG! I hope you will join me!

This Week's Speaker
Joshua Turknett, M.D., is a board-certified neurologist who leads the firm’s neuroscience and learning initiatives. Dr. Turknett has practiced in the Atlanta area for the past twelve years, and is also a clinical researcher, best-selling author, musician, medical editor of the Journal of Evolution and Health, a leading voice in the ancestral health movement, and the founder of Brainjo, a company that uses the science of learning and neuroplasticity to create optimized learning systems.
Dr. Turknett received his Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience from Wesleyan University and his MD from Emory University. He completed his residency at the University of Florida Health Science Center. He is an Atlanta native and is the son of Bob and Lyn Turknett, co-founders of Turknett Leadership Group. He lives in Roswell, Georgia, with his wife and two children.
Dr. Turknett has over two decades of experience in the field of cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, and now brings that expertise to Turknett Leadership Group team to integrate behavioral neuroscience into TLG’s existing services and to develop neuroscience-driven learning solutions based on the Brainjo Method. Dr. Turknett will lead the incorporation of the neuroscience of learning into coaching programs, assessment, and culture change processes, and will help assure that leadership development programs, whether individual, classroom-based, or web-based, result in “learning that sticks.”
He is also partnering with TLG to create the Turknett Center for Elite Cognition, a new initiative to develop comprehensive programs for optimizing cognitive performance, creativity, and idea generation at both the individual and organizational level. As artificial intelligence becomes more important and pervasive, companies that thrive will be those that maximize their collective human intelligence and uniquely human capabilities.

Charity Spotlight
Friends of Bulloch Hall
Mission:
To accurately restore, preserve, and interpret this nationally significant antebellum historic site and to present an authentic interpretation to all Roswell citizens and visitors through quality tours, educational programs, and community outreach and events.
Fast Facts:
- Friends of Bulloch was founded in 1993.
- Bulloch Hall was built in 1839 by slaves of Major James Stephens Bulloch, one of Roswell’s first settlers and grandson of Governor Archibald Bulloch.
- Designed by architect Willis Ball of Connecticut, Bulloch Hall is an example of Greek Revival architecture listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Mittie Bulloch, mother of President Theodore Roosevelt, grew up in the house before moving to New York. President Roosevelt visited Bulloch Hall in 1905.
- Bulloch Hall is open daily for visitors to explore the grounds, restoration projects, and exhibits, and to participate in educational programs as well as guided and self-guided tours.
- A portion of the grounds of Bulloch Hall are known as Orchard Hill is being restored as a water conservation demonstration area that will include a gazebo, bridge, dock, nature trials, and a natural amphitheater.
- Roswell Rotary funds are planned to be used to complete the Peter Abreu Memorial Gateway and Stone Amphitheater on Orchard Hill.

A Blast from the Past!
Roswell Rotary was visited by District Governor Daroon during Bill Lewis' year as President of Roswell Rotary (1986-87). Be sure to ask Bill about his year as President!
Homelessness in Roswell
National Homeless Count - Point in Time - North Fulton
The Point In Time (PIT) Homeless Count conducted by The Fulton County Continuum of Care is crucial for tracking the success of local efforts to end homelessness across the nation and for planning future efforts and will be conducted on January 17, 2019.
The PIT Count gives the County and its partner agencies valuable information on the homeless population that makes it possible to strategically target resources for optimal results. We will be surveying the unsheltered homeless who are sleeping in outdoor locations such as sidewalks, parks, encampments and under bridges. The surveys will provide demographic information on each homeless individual, give insight to their homeless history, and assess individual needs that will enable the Continuum to effectively plan housing and service interventions to prevent and end homelessness in Fulton County.
