President's Message
Opening Our Hearts

Roswell Rotary Elves were in full force last Friday assisting the Roswell Police Department GIVES for the Holiday program.

The Roswell Police Department has adopted several families to make sure they have a joyous holiday season by providing gifts, food and financial help.

It was our pleasure to wrap gifts.   The joy that you give to others is the joy that comes back to you

This Week's Speaker
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture

Gary W. Black serves as the 16th Commissioner of Agriculture in Georgia's history. Currently in his third term, Commissioner Black has served in various leadership positions during his 40-year career in Georgia agriculture extending from the Georgia Farm Bureau to the Georgia Agribusiness Council. Black is a graduate of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and a past president of the college's alumni society. He currently serves on advisory committees for the United States Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency and the Export Import Bank of the United States. Under his leadership, Georgia Department of Agriculture divisions for information technology, animal health, homeland security and food safety have garnered national acclaim.

A tireless marketing advocate, Commissioner Black has led innovation in domestic and international promotion through the renowned Georgia Grown branding program. School nutrition directors, first-time exporters, produce growers and recipe dreamers alike, have found that the Georgia Grown collaborative approach is an unparalleled tool that helps Georgians start businesses and expand markets.

Black is a Leadership Georgia Pattillo Award recipient and the 2017 Georgia Trend Magazine Georgian of the Year. He and his wife Lydia raise commercial beef cattle on their family farm in Commerce, Georgia. They serve together in various ministries at Maysville Baptist Church.

The Salvation Army is gearing for up Christmas. But this year is different. They are expecting a 155% increase in request for assistance this holiday season.

Rescue Christmas is to help The Salvation Army compensate for what is anticipated to be a considerable decline in donations in red kettles this year due to store closures and reduced foot traffic in stores throughout the area.

Charity Spotlight
Homestretch

Mission:

To guide working homeless families with minor children in North Metro Atlanta toward increased self-reliance and stability by providing life-skills education, mentoring, and supportive housing.

Fast Facts:

• Founded in 1993, Homestretch is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this fall.

• Today, the poverty rate in Georgia tops 18% and is even higher for single mothers.

• 14.8% of metro-Atlantans live in poverty.

• 23.3% of Roswell households, many earning minimum wage, are forced to spend more than 30% of their income for housing leaving very little for food, clothing, utilities, transportation, child care and medical care.

• In Fulton County, a person would need to work 91 hours per week at minimum wage to be able to afford a 1-bedroom apartment.

• Homestretch has been recognized for effectiveness by the Georgia Alliance to End Homelessness, Community Housing Development Organization (HUD), and the North Fulton Homelessness and Housing Continuum of Care.

• Roswell Rotarians actively participate in annual fundraisers that include: Peachtree Tea in February, Road Race in Roswell in April, and on alternating years BBQ in the Burbs and the annual Golf Tournament.
