As part of Roswell Rotary After Hours Club support of the Unity Garden at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, club members are volunteering to work in the greenhouses and gardens.
It takes a great number of volunteers and hours to tend the garden year-round. CNC has a core of dedicated weekly volunteers that come on Tuesdays and Thursdays to work the garden. With year-round production, the beds have to be changed out often. This occurs 5 to 10 times per year based on the type of produce being grown. These major transitions are handled by volunteer corporate and civic groups.
The After Hours Workday volunteers include family members and members of the Roswell Rotary Club. Tasks include planting seeds in starter pots, transferring new plants to larger pots for sale at the annual spring plant sale (fundraiser), and change out and preparation of the beds for new plantings. First workday was completed on Feb. 18th and other days are scheduled for March 11th and April 29th.
The Unity Garden produces 8 to 10 tons of fresh produce each year for donation to those in need. All the food raised is donated to the food pantry at North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC). This is wholesome, fresh produce, not the type received from local supermarkets which may be within a day or two of their expiration dates. The food pantry serves about 770 families each week and close to 40,000 food orders are filled each year.
