Vinings Cumberland Rotary Sponsors New Junior Book Club at the Vinings Library

by Linda Muir and Amanda Dusse

The Junior Book Club for 3 to 5 year-old children is a weekly, early literacy-based program at the Vinings Library. It is designed to help young library patrons, who attend with their parents or caregivers, to develop language and literacy skills. A Vinings Cumberland Rotary Club Local Service Grant funds the program, and Rotary Club members are encouraged to become volunteers at the library to read to the preschoolers and to help with book-based discussions afterward. The Rotary grant makes it possible to give books away to the Junior Book Club members and to entertain them with professional puppet shows put on by the Atlanta Center for Puppetry Arts.

Literacy is the bedrock of learning and is the driver of future academic success.  More than just being able to read, literacy is having the vocabulary and comprehension skills to understand the spoken and written word.  It gives people the tools to interact with and thrive in the world. The earlier a child develops literacy skills, the better equipped he or she will be for school and lifelong success.  The Junior Book Club helps build that foundation through books, discussions, and literacy-based activities and gives parents and caregivers the tools and confidence to continue literacy-building at home. The Vinings Cumberland Rotary Club is proud to further early childhood literacy in our community.
