President Alex's Message
Fellow Rotarians: Thank you for your prayers and good wishes. Covid is no joke but I am on the mend. I really appreciate the family of Rotary and so many people checking in on me and offering food etc. A special thank you for Governor Elect Gordon stepping in to lead our meeting last weekend. By all accounts it was a terrific meeting with Maurice Smith and his inspirational story of choosing to make a difference. I believe that this mindset is the power of Rotary. There is nothing we cannot do if we do not try. I also wish to thank the Meetings Committee, Chaired by David White. David goes above and beyond to make sure that our meetings run on time and that food service is what it should be. David has been working tirelessly with the city and our vendors to ensure that our club gets nothing but the best. Please thank him and Talk of the Town for setting the bar! We will continue to improve our food offerings and maintain our budget. This week we have South Carolina Representative Brandon Guffey joining us. This will undoubtedly be a moving and important meeting concerning mental health as he shares his own story of the loss of his high school son to suicide through social media platform organized sex extortion. Brandon Guffey is currently a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives for District 48 in South Carolina. As a politician Guffey has made it his mission to raise awareness and bring change to cyber crimes as a result of losing his teenage son, Gavin, in 2022 due to sextortion. As a freshman legislator he was able to get a law passed in his first year against sextortion, an unheard of task for a freshman. Gavin's Law defines the terms of "Sextortion" and has made SC the strictest state on penalties for abuse. Guffey has also launched a foundation, Less Than 3 , Incorporated (www.lessthan3SC.org) in May of 2023. Less Than 3 is a 501(c) (3) foundation with the focus of raising awareness about teenage mental health and suicide. On a personal and professional level, Brandon is a husband, father and entrepreneur. He has bought and sold multiple service and retail businesses. Tales from a Recovering Perfectionist
The next Roswell Rotary After Hours meeting is tonight at 6:30 at The Artillery Room. The club will welcome past RRC President Lisa Carlisle who will share "tales from a recovering perfectionist." First Responders Cookout Sept. 16
The fourth annual 9-11 First Responders Cookout will be held Saturday, September 16th, 2023, between 2 pm and 8 pm at Roswell Fire Station #24, 1400 Old Alabama Road, Roswell, 30076. Volunteers are needed starting at 2:00 PM.
During the September 11, 2001, attacks, 2,977 people were killed and more than 6,000 others were injured. Of the 2,977 fatalities, 2,753 were killed in the World Trade Center and surrounding area, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania. These deaths included 265 on the four planes. The attacks remain the deadliest terrorist act in world history. Rivers Alive Roswell Clean Up Project
Rivers Alive, Georgia’s annual river cleanup, comes to Roswell on September 16. The event, co-hosted by Keep Roswell Beautiful and the City of Roswell, is part of a statewide campaign to preserve Georgia’s 70,100 miles of rivers and streams. Small groups of volunteers will be dispersed across the city to perform beautification projects, including litter pick-ups, invasive plant and shrub removal, mulching, native plant planting, and storm drain marking. This year, cleanup sites will include Riverside Park, Dotsie Garner Mills Park, Old Roswell Cemetery, Bulloch Hall, and more.
