Happy Rotary New Year!

Today is the start of a new Rotary year! We look forward to Rotary Opening Opportunities in our community and around the world - under the leadership of:

  • President Ardy Bastien at the Rotary Club of Dunwoody
  • District Governor Kirk Driskell from the Rotary Club of Alpharetta
  • Rotary International President Holger Knaack from the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Molin in Germany. Holger Knaack's story is featured in the July issue of The Rotarian magazine - he's our first ever RI President from Germany, wears jeans, eschews ties most of the time and is a strong supporter of Rotary Youth Exchange. The article quotes a German phrase: "man hot die Leute ins Boot" that translates into "getting people on board to work together toward a common goal." It also says it's important to our RI President to know that "working hard doesn't mean you can't also have a good time." Great inspiration for the coming year.

And you might want to read your Rotarian magazine during this week off from meetngs - because you never know what questions Gary Lane might ask with raffle tickets or a Starbucks card for the winning answer.

Mark Your Calendars for July
Starting with Installation of Officers on July 10

President Cathie, President-Elect Ardy and your Board of Directors have been carefully considering our plans for the immediate future. While most if not all of us miss the opportunity to get together face-to-face, we are 100% committed to doing that safely. Here's what we're thinking for the next few weeks:

  • Our next regular meeting will be July 10 - and we will hold it in person at the Dunwoody Country Club. Ardy and our officers and directors will be installed for the new Rotary Year - and we plan to welcome our three new members who have joined during the pandemic. DCC is the only place that can accommodate us right now with the social distancing we think makes it safer for us to meet in person. We will require masks - and will have masks and hand sanitizer available. The Country Club will take temperatures at the front door - anyone with a temperature of 100 or more will be asked to leave. DCC staff (with masks and gloves) will provide cafeteria style food service and pre-rolled silverware, water and such will be available at DCC-manned stations in the meeting room. There will be plexi-glass shields between you and food servers.
  • Our next Thirsty Thursday - on July 16 - will also be at the Dunwoody Country Club. This will be our year-end celebration, and President Cathie will present awards for the 2019-20 Rotary year. We'll be back with more details - just know that all the same precautions described above will be in place for the July 16 event.
  • Our July 24 meeting is also likely to be at the Dunwoody Country Club - a breakfast meeting with Police Chief Billy Grogan as our speaker.

We recognize that this is an individual decision for everyone - and that people are in different places with regard to how quickly we move out of "shelter in place." We would like to hear your concerns and ideas, and are ready to try to answer any questions you may have.

We are also exploring the possibility of keeping a Zoom option for attending in place for those who aren't yet ready for in-person meetings and will keep you posted on our progress.

Celebrating and Preserving Our History

... From President Emeritus PDG Bill Mulkey

I was delighted to see the Rotary Club of Dunwoody recognized for its work this past Rotary year! Congratulations to President Cathie Brumfield and all of you for your dedication and hard work.

For many years, I have had the honor of serving as your Club Historian, recording the story of the difference we have made - and capturing the fun and fellowship we have enjoyed in the 36 years since we received our charter. Starting this year, I am happy to say I will have help in this task from Past President Jackie Cuthbert, who has agreed to serve as Co-Historian. Jackie created many of the club yearbooks in the past and our 25th anniversary book. I look forward to her help with this important part of preserving the "Spirit of Dunwoody."

From Your Historians
Happy Fourth of July!

Normally, President Ardy Bastien would be running the Peachtree and Dunwoody Rotarians would be out in force - marching in the Dunwoody July 4 Parade and serving hot dogs and good will to the community this Saturday. And some time this week, some of us would have gathered to create our float for the parade. It's been a Dunwoody tradition since the mid-1990s when we were a founding sponsor of the Dunwoody Fourth of July celebration. Did you know:

  • Past President Hardy Croom used to host the Blue Ribbon Float Builders at the Dunwoody Country Club for a great pre-4th party!
  • You could expect to see almost all our members and their families at this great event - walking and riding bikes in the parade, decorating our hot dog booth and getting ready for the hot "rush hour" that occurred as the parade came into Dunwoody Village. In years gone by, we served as many as 750 hot dogs - in recent years more like 200-300. Last year, under Kobelah's leadership, we added chili and fresh tomatoes to our hot dog toppings.

The pictures above are from last year's celebration - we look forward to returning to Mt. Vernon Highway and Dunwoody Village in future years. In the meantime, treat yourself to a hot dog and have a happy Fourth of July!
