World Food Day

The Rotary Club of Alpharetta takes pride as having the “Best Breakfast in Rotary”. If not the best we are certainly known for the fabulous breakfast spread. As World Hunger Day approached in October we decided we wanted to do something special to recognize that around the world the average dollars available for breakfast is $1.25. We coordinated with our Chef and asked him to prepare a meal for the Club that the cost per Rotarian would on exceed $1.25. The dollars saved would be provided to the YMCA for their summer hunger program. Rotarians were told to expect a different breakfast but still the shock of seeing a toaster and a loaf of bread replacing the table of donut, bagels and other delicious treats was a shock. As was the buffet line with only three basic items eggs, beans and rice, replacing a normal array of meats, egg, pancakes, waffles, grits, oatmeal and more. Even with the most basic meal not a complaint was heard and many suggested we consider doing this again. It was an incredible way to share a real world reality where all the members were engaged. In the end we didn’t miss the lavish breakfast and were able to help those who are food insecure in our community.
