PRESIDENT'S CORNER
President Rollin Richmond's Welcome Message

In 2021, The Rotary Club of Sandy Springs celebrated our 50th anniversary of providing volunteer services and financial support to charities in and around Sandy Springs. Our core seven areas of focus are: Basic Education and Literacy, Economic and Community Development, Water and Sanitation, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Maternal and Child Health and Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution. If you have a heart’s desire to serve in one of these areas, Rotary is the best civic organization to utilize your time, talent and treasures. I welcome you to visit our club for a free lunch on us and to experience the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs' hospitality and energy. We meet on Monday for lunch at 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Hilton Perimeter Suites, 6120 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. You can just show up at our lunch meeting or call me at 707.599.6699 for more information about our lunch meeting or Rotary in general. Come and network with your fellow professionals, and community and business leaders, and learn how Rotary can fit in your future. Enjoy Rotary and Serve to Change Lives!

SSEF Lightning Road Race
A Run to Help Someone with their Education

Sandy Springs Education Force(SSEF) designs and implements free supplemental programs to engage, support and encourage our economically disadvantaged public school students to excel academically, finish high school and then continue to a vocation or to college. While SSEF sponsored programs are focused on the economically disadvantaged student, SSEF does not discriminate; any student may participate.

Thank you to all who came out to run in the SSEF Lightning Road Race!  Despite the fact that the Heard Ferry bridge, which was part of the original race route, was compromised and no longer available for car or pedestrian traffic,  they were able to re-route the course and have a complete 5K and 10K.  The course is still flat and fast and there was a great turn out.

Rotary Club of Sandy Springs was a Graduate level sponsor of the SSEF Lightning Road Race.

Doing Good In The Neighborhood
CAC Needs Your Help at the Food Pantry

Pictured above Bettina Cothran, RCSS Member Linda Randolph, and Steven Parker volunteer at the Community Assistance Center to help sort food and prepare CAC to open for business on Saturday.

Community Assistance Center(CAC) is a cornerstone of the human services network in the northern Perimeter area. Since 1987, CAC has played a vital role in the cities of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody by preventing hunger and homelessness, providing assistance for basic needs such as utilities, food and clothing, and actively engaging clients to work towards greater self-sufficiency.

The need for human services in the Sandy Springs and Dunwoody communities is real. In suburban neighborhoods across the Atlanta region, increasing numbers of families struggle to make ends meet. Like many communities across the country, they are experiencing new challenges related to suburban poverty.  Atlanta has experienced a dramatic demographic shift between 2000 and 2011 as the number of people living in poverty in the Atlanta suburbs grew by almost 160 percent. The need for assistance among residents of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody continues to increase as the cities grow and living expenses escalate

Please consider coming out and volunteering to this vital service in our Sandy Spring community at the Client Choice Mini-Market Food Pantry located at  8607 Roswell Road Sandy Springs, GA 30350.

If you are interested, text, call or email Linda Randolph at 404-277-4246 or linda@genealogyatlanta.com to get more information.  Thank you for your service above self!

Next Meeting
Richard Woods, Georgia's School Superintendent to visit RCSS

Join us on Monday, November 6th at 12:15pm at the Sandy Springs Perimeter Hilton to hear Richard Woods, Georgia's School Superintendent speak.

Richard Woods was elected as Georgia's State School Superintendent in November of 2014, and reelected in 2018. Woods has over 30 years of Pre-K through 12th-grade experience in public education. He was a high school teacher for 14 years, serving as department chair and teacher mentor. For eight years, Woods served in administrative roles including assistant principal, principal, curriculum director, testing coordinator, Pre-K director, and alternative school director.

During his time as State School Superintendent, Woods has remained laser-focused on the classroom and the wellbeing of Georgia's students. Under his leadership, the state has seen its largest-ever reduction of high-stakes testing requirements, an all-time high graduation rate, a 97% graduation rate for Career Pathway completers, and steady increases in SAT and ACT scores.

Georgia has expanded STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, introduced STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) school certification, and introduced new student opportunities in the areas of personal finance, fine arts, and Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education. The Georgia Department of Education has hired its first-ever employees dedicated to supporting the fine arts and military students, and established an Office of Whole Child Supports, an Office of School Safety and Climate, and an Office of Rural Education and Innovation.

Superintendent Woods has been honored with the National Art Education Association's Distinguished Service Outside the Profession Award, the Patriotic Employer Award from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (a Department of Defense office), and the Honorary American FFA Degree by the National FFA Organization.

He and his wife, Lisha, a retired 30-year educator, are longtime residents of Tifton, Georgia.
