From a GRSP Scholar
All About New Relationships ... and Family

Sophie Skovdal Glumer from Denmark, Class of 2017-2018, sponsored by RC of Dougherty County and Albany, Georgia Southwestern University

My year in America has been amazing. It is unbelievable that I got the opportunity to spend a whole year in Georgia through the GRSP. This has undoubtedly been one of the best times of my life - it has been a year with new relationships that I am thankful for.

When I first arrived in America my flight was delayed, I did not catch my other flight to Atlanta, and therefore I had to stay in Charlotte, North Carolina for the night. I was tired - after 10 hours on a plane - and in some ways a little scared because I did not know what to expect coming to America. Right at the beginning, my host family showed me caring and loving feelings even though we had not met each other. They were in contact with me all the time and wanted to make sure that I was doing well. My host family means everything to me and has definitely been one of the best parts of my experience. We have created a special bond and I feel that I am a part of their family and they are a part of mine. They have been there for me through thick and thin, and I feel they have shown me how America is by taking me to places and spending weekends and holidays with them. I am so grateful that I have met them and I know for sure that we will always stay connected.

Having a trustee gives you a feeling of safety. My trustee and his family not only helped me prepare myself for school and other necessities but it feels as if they have always been my "backup" family. My host parents live 45 minutes away, so it has been nice that my Trustee was nearby if I just needed to take a little break from college and go hang out with them.

During my time in America, I have developed myself and who I am. Before I came to America I was not sure what I wanted to do for a living and career. During my first semester, I took Introduction to Psychology, which was an eye opener for what I want to study when I go back to Denmark. Therefore, I decided to take two more psychology classes during my second semester, which made me want to study psychology even more.

As mentioned before, I got new relationships through this year. I have found amazing friends from Georgia Southwestern State University. Furthermore, I have found a lot of friends through GRSP, which means I have connections all around the world now. I have had so much fun with all of my new friends. I have travelled around America with both GRSP students and friends from college. This experience has made my bond unique to every single one of them.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who has been a part of my life and who has had a significant influence on the past year. I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know so much more about myself, America as a country, and meet incredible, lovely people that I always will remember.
